What is STAR?
Shelter & Teamwork Achieves Results
The STAR shelter has 25 rooms, 5 of these (10 beds) are for medically needy homeless people as they are released from the hospital. The remaining 20 rooms are for families with children. In our first 4 months of operation we have housed 38 families, including a total of 65 children.
Families may stay in our shelter “up to 6 months”. During this time they are required to find a job and keep it, attend case management appointments, seek assistance with substance abuse issues, send their children to school, and assist with chores in the facility.
The shelter provides tutoring by certified school teachers and arts and crafts classes offered by Students Offering Services (SOS), a local high school group.
Classes to help families manage after they leave are also provided at the shelter. Classes that are in progress or coming up soon include: anger management, parenting, nutrition, construction, and financial management.
