Direct Services
The Homeless Center located at 340 North Street is a hub of activity 5 days a week. Through these doors walk people from all over the United States with something very important in common, homelessness.
The Homeless Center opens its doors at 8:15 in the morning and begins to see people with issues such as hunger, need to use the phone or pick up mail, looking for a ticket out of town, need to see a medical professional, help looking for a job, work boots to get a better job, assistance with prescriptions, a hot shower, clean clothes or just the chance to get out of the weather.
Every day at 11:30 a hot meal is served in conjunction with Halifax Urban Ministries. These meals are served by over 400 volunteers every month. We serve more than 1,000 unique individuals each month. This truly is a central location for homeless people to obtain services and work toward a better life.
In the last year, Nurse Jenny and rotating doctors from Halifax Hospital have seen over 1,100 clients and have diverted over 600 from going to the Emergency Room (due to getting their needs met at the Center) - an estimated savings of over $120,000 to local tax payers.
