The Homeless Assistance Corporation (HAC) incorporated in June, 2006.  In September of that year HAC assumed responsibility from the Homeless Coalition for delivering services to homeless families, children and individuals in Volusia and Flagler counties.  On October 9, 2006 the STAR Shelter for homeless families with children and medically needy individuals was opened.

HAC is a social service agency dedicated to providing homeless families and individuals with opportunities to confront the causes of homelessness in their lives and work towards self-sufficiency. The philosophy of helping the homeless help themselves and thus build self-esteem and dignity is inherent in the comprehensive services rendered to guests.  These include full time case management, access to computers for job searches and applications to main stream benefits, a wellness center, showers, clean clothes and shelter for homeless families and medically needy individuals.

Our goal is simple, to help homeless individuals and families to break the cycle of homelessness and again become contributing members of society.

Here are some sobering statistics on the homeless situation in Volusia and Flagler County:

  • 3,000 homeless in Volusia/Flagler Counties
  • 1,000 homeless children are in local schools
  • 23% of the homeless are Veterans and they more frequently have health needs
  • 16% are over the age of 50
  • 43% are homeless for more than a year
  • 77% Florida Natives lived here before becoming homeless, or have family here
  • 29% have physical/medical problems
  • 65% have mental health needs and/or substance abuse needs
  • 35% are working
